Anglo Saxon Northumbrian coins

The Anglo Saxon coinage of Northumbria may be divided into two issuing authorities, the kings of Northumbria and also the Archbishops of York. The small coins, c.10 mm in diameter, start off as reasonable silver (known these days as "sceats"), akin to the Saxon coinage in the rest of Britiain but eventually degenerate into a base metal coinage (generally referred to as "stycas"). The termination of the series is in the mid to late 9th century and is due to the Viking invasion of the north.
